Many countries on the mainland of Europe have had large communal bins with large underground chambers for decades, making waste collection more efficient for councils.

North west Cambridge has gone one step further by installing smart communal bins that dispatch the collection lorry when they are full. These new bins have replaced around 9,000 wheelie bins. Each bin has a sleek steel bin chute above ground, not much bigger than a kitchen bin with a large underground chamber.

Residents are told what can be recycled and given clearly labelled bins for their kitchens which match the signage on the steel bin chutes outside.

Residents no longer have to worry about where to store their wheelie bins and remember to wheel them out for each bin collection day. They will also be free of the sight and smell of the unsightly traditional bins – one underground bin replaces around 20 wheelie bins.
