Two councillors have now run their own ward-wide referendum in order to give their constituents the chance to voice their opinions on the council’s development that will see the Borough of Tunbridge Wells burdened with a £72m loan. The council is determined to build itself new offices and a new theatre in the heart of Tunbridge Wells.
Southborough North Councillor Joe Simmons was the first to canvas his residents. 342 voted against versus 86 for the scheme, which the council are pushing to approve this December.
Sherwood residents also showed their disapproval of the project, with constituents voting four to one against the project to build new council offices and a theatre in Calverley Grounds.
The council voted down a motion for a full town referendum on the project back in June.
